Gamification Stuff we love: Class Dojo and ClassCraft

Teachers have for years been at the front end of engagement, they experienced teaching generation Y before most of us saw them entering our workplace teams. It is no surprise that some excellent examples of gamified ways of learning have been invented or are used by teachers. Today I would like to look at 2 very different examples namely ClassDojo and Class Craft

Classdojo is a free tool created for teachers, it runs online and on mobile devices and teachers can give instant feedback on a pupils performance, which in turn earns them points when it is positive. Parents can also receive the report on their child and the teacher in an instant can see an overview of how a class is doing. The target aim is the younger age group of pre-school and primary school, the graphics alone will give you that impression. The tool is very user-friendly and simple, which is a bonus in a busy teachers’ schedule. What I like about is that by a simple online graphic feedback tool positive behaviour can be reinforced and thanks to the classroom group dynamic also be encouraged. Have a look at the clip below to hear how a teacher is using it in her class:

For the more advanced school students a teacher invented Classcraft, which is an online multiplayer role play game used to encourage collaboration and exploration beyond just the topic  or class lesson at hand. The objective is to set learning up as an adventure, interaction is rewarded or punished both on an individual as well as team level, competition is driving further engagement. Teachers can control some of the game elements and encourage further collaboration and skills development.
