Gamification Mechanic Monday: Badges

Badges as a gamification mechanic

Badges are a well known game mechanic often applied to make a system or process gamified. In fact if you have ever taken part in scouts groups or girl guides, they have had badges for years to motivate achievement and special behaviour. When I was in primary school, I earned badges for swimming achievements for different distances, different strokes etc and there were always new ones to strive towards. We received a physical badge that could be stitched on a shirt to show off the distances.

Badges can add a bit of fun, they can be a surprise factor or add a special reward for behaviour you would like to encourage more of or you can stimulate the inner girl guide or scout and set them up as a way of achievement rewards.
